Day Of Dance at Roses Theatre – Saturday 25th January 2013

GDance and Roses Theatre partner to bring Dance Artist in Residence Bridie Doyle to Gloucestershire

In September 2013 our partners, the Roses Theatre, appointed Bridie Doyle as Dance Artist in Residence. The appointment was made in partnership with us, as part of their broader dance development initiative.

They have long been a beacon for contemporary dance in the region, offering four weekly youth dance sessions for dance enthusiasts aged 4-18yrs but following a successful application to the Big Lottery Reaching Communities Fund, they are now doing even more to increase their dance provision, especially for adults in the community.

The funds have already allowed them to appoint a Specialist Dance Officer and to offer residents in care homes the opportunity to participate in weekly dance sessions, and they are now extending their programme to cater for working women, giving them the opportunity to enjoy a mid day work out at one of their half hour long lunchtime dance sessions.

Bridie will be working to develop a unique full length performance which will be produced in house ready for the New Year.

She draws inspiration from the aristocratic families of the 18th and 19th Century, especially their fascination with natural beauty, art and nature.

Bridie is particularly interested in how, by collecting art and nature for the purpose of study, aristocratic families actually defaced and destroyed it and it is this concept that the performance will explore through contemporary dance, aerial dance and character work.

To bring nature indoors, Bridie’s performance will utilise media strands such as film, animation and projection and this reflects the Roses' ongoing commitment not only to dance but to arts across the board.

The performance will use full head masks representing a family of Deer in order to investigate the treatment of nature and wildlife in aristocratic circles. A site-specific production, staged at a location in keeping with its theme, the performance will raise their profile and see the growth of new audiences.

Bridie’s appointment not only provides a platform for exciting new collaborations but further enriches their dance offering as children and young people will have the opportunity to work with a talented choreographer and to learn new skills such as aerial rigging.

Bridie is an exciting addition to the Roses' eclectic programme.

She is a founding member of Citrus Arts Ltd a Wales based physical theatre company who specialise in touring and collaborative works that include circus, dance and drama.

Citrus have toured several of their own productions across Wales, as well as one-off spectacle collaborations with leading arts organisations and community groups.

Bridie also works as a freelance movement specialist and teacher for companies such as Earthfall Physical Theatre Company, Bath Spa University, Nofitstate Circus and Circomedia.

This impressive production will not only be a spectacle in its own right but presents a number of exciting opportunities for The Roses. For the first time outside of pantomime season, they are developing a full length production in house and hope to see it tour nationally in the near future.

They are regularly collaborating with external dance organisations (like GDance) and companies by holding sample performances and feedback sessions and are confident that this is the beginning of a contemporary dance network which will go from strength to strength.

Cheltenham Festivals Recommended Composer Brings His Music Home

The collaborative producers of Stuck in the Mud, GDance, Ballet Cymru and National Trust asked Meurig Bowen at Cheltenham Music Festival to recommend a composer to create an original score for the show.

Jack White, an up-and-coming composer, winner of the Welsh Livery Guild music award and shortlisted composer for the BBC National Orchestra of Wales Welsh Composer Showcase was his suggestion.

“We were ecstatic with the music he created for the show. The music is like a lead character in the show. It moves with the dancers and the moods of the show giving it energy and pathos. It is energetic when it needs to be and haunting when it needs to be” Fiona Nevada – GDance Marketing Manager

How it came about from Jack's perspective;

"Cheltenham Music Festival contacted me initially. They described the work as a large-scale dance piece working with GDance, Ballet Cymru and a team of professional dancers.  They introduced Marc Brew (the Artistic director) to me and I had a Skype-interview with him.  Marc was interested in the ideas I had for the project, and also whether stylistically my music would fit the project.  I could see that Marc would be a great person to work with, and that he had a very clear idea of what he wanted for the project.  In my eyes, these were good things since I would be relying on him to guide the sort of music he wanted for the piece.  Upon learning about Marc’s impressive professional career, I also wanted to learn as much as I could from him about the world of dance."

Of working for Stuck in the Mud Jack says,

“It has been a brilliant experience working with the team.  It is the first time that I have worked directly with a choreographer and dancers.  I have been given a window into the processes undertaken to create a work in a completely different artistic discipline.

Since this was essentially music to fit someone else’s overall idea, the process was different to ‘free-composition’.  I was working with timing and tempo issues to consider and making sure that the ‘mood’ of each piece suited.  Mostly this was straightforward since Marc was able to communicate what he wanted very clearly.  The system we ended up employing was one where I would provide a rough piano-sketch of each section.  Marc would then approve it or ask for changes.

On the tour to Newport 12 & 13 November;

"I am very excited to have my music performed in Newport.  Primarily for my friends and family to be able to come and see the work but also because it will be the first time that Ballet Cymru perform using my music in our homeland - so that will be a very cool!

Born and bred in Newport, I have been involved in music in Newport in many different ways so it’s nice to have my own music available to audiences here for the first time.

It is a step in the right direction (for Newport Market) to be using the space in a creative way. There is a lot of pressure on cultural services at the moment and I feel strongly opposed to anything which removes or weakens people’s connection with their own culture.  I am therefore very glad to be able to use Newport Market as a cultural space and hope that it will inspire more creative thinking, and inspire new generations of Welsh dancers and musicians.”

Bad Taste Cru, Dance City and Juice Festival present ‘No Excuses, No Limits’ Workshop with BBoy Redo

Opportunity to take part in a workshop led by Redo, a first for the North East, and one of the only workshops of its type in the world.

Hailing from Holland, 24 year old, Redouan Ait Chitt, better known as Redo, is a professional break-dancer who teaches, performs, and competes in events all across the world. He is a member of Funky Dope Manoeuvres and the world renowned ILL-Abilities Crew

ILL-Abilities consists five of the world’s best break-dancers  hailing from Canada, USA, Chile, and Holland, and most remarkably, each have overcame physical or learning disabilities. ILL-Abilities use motivational entertainment to encourage positive self- belief and limitless possibilities.

The goal of their crew is to shatter any misconceptions that society may have on people with disabilities. Together, they created a global movement by spreading their message: “No Excuses, No Limits”.

Redo has physical disabilities; he has a shorter right arm, which lacks an elbow joint and has a total of five fingers. He is also missing his right hip; has a shorter right leg, and walks with the aid of a prosthetic.

Despite these complications, Redo never allowed his situation to hinder his life and states that,“I never let my situation take over my life. I took control over my situation.”

Growing up, Redo did everything a typical child would do and he participated in many types of sports, events, and activities.

Redo began to learn breakdance when he was 14 years old and immediately loved this art-form. Despite him initially not being able to manage all of the steps, through creativity, determination, and the encouragement of his friends, he was able to create a unique, powerful and awe-inspiring style of his own.
Today, Redo performs in theatre shows all over the world, enters competitions, teaches classes, gives workshops and gives motivational lectures. His ambition is to travel the world and share his story and hopefully inspire and motivate as many people possible on his journey.
